A few thoughts about how to eat out and still follow the paleo plan. These are just some random thoughts...not all of these are ideal or 100% paleo, but you can't always be 100%. Do the best you can.
Grocery stores (Schnucks, Dierbergs, etc...)
Hit the Salad bar, grab a piece of prepared fish or chicken from the hot bar, grab some fruit or avocado from the produce section. (M's favorite lunch is a piece of salmon, salad, top with an avocado and a peach) Don't be afraid to grab a knife and sit down at the table and do a bit of the work yourself. Drink water!
Mexican food
Order fajitas (steak, chicken and/or shrimp) with grilled peppers and onions. Pass on the tortillas, rice, beans, sour cream, cheese. Ask for some extra lettuce and salsa, makes a great fajita salad.
Ruby Tuesdays
Steak, chicken or fish dish that is not breaded. They have plenty of veggie options: zucchini and butternut squash are my favorites.
Captain D's (or similar) if you have to do fast food
Seasoned tilapia or shrimp skewers, double broccoli, skip the rice.
Steakhouse
Steak! Yay! Some have sweet potatoes! Double veggie, skip the regular potato.
Burger Places
Burger, no bun, no cheese, extra lettuce, etc...try to order one that comes with guacamole if they have it. Eat with a knife and fork, although Red Robin will do a lettuce wrap for you.
Steak and Shake
Guacamole steak burger, no bun. Salad on the side.
Chick Fil A
Grilled chicken sandwich, no bun. Fruit on the side
Fruit Salad with Grilled Chicken. (Wendy's has a similar salad right now)
Breakfast places
Eggs, bacon, fruit (Skip the carbs/grains...there are a lot of them!) I like an omelet that has some veggies in it. Note that IHOP puts pancake batter in their omelets, so you have to ask them to "crack the eggs" instead of using the omelet mix. Bob Evans has been happy to do this for me also, I don't think they use anything like that in their omelet mix, but the waitress volunteered the option. My favorite is a Bacado omelet from First Watch with bacon and avocado (skip the cheese), fruit cup instead of any bread options, served with salsa.
Gas Stations
Water or unsweetened tea. Some type of trail mix or mixed nuts with as little salt and sugar as possible. Maybe some beef jerky, but hard to find good jerky without a lot of extra stuff in it. This is in an emergency.
